My Grandparents Henry Price and Sylvia Barnett

My grandfather, Henry Garfield Price, was born on 15 November 1881 in Bates County, Missouri. He immigrated to Montana and married my grandmother Sylvia Elizabeth Anderson about 1906 in Missoula, Missoula County, Montana. She was born on 16 September 1888 in Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana. Her parents were Nels Henry Anderson and Wilhilmina Elizabeth Carldotter. They were immigrants from Kalmar, Sweden. Some records say that he was born in Stockholm. Henry and Sylvia had two children, Harry Garfield and Walter Reams (my father).

This marriage was not to last. They were divorced and grandma found work near Boardman, Oregon where she married Emmet Carpenter. They were also later divorced after a number of years.

During the depression the family moved to Long Beach, California because my Dad’s grandfather (Nels Henry Anderson) and my Dad’s uncle (Albert Henry Anderson) were in the plastering business and had work available. Prior to this time, grandmother was the post mistress at Morgan, Morrow County, Oregon. After the depression, my Dad stayed in California and pursued the plastering trade. Grandma and her other son, Harry Garfield Price returned to Portland.

Grandma later married DeLoss Barnett, the love of her life, and was always known to me as grandma Barnett. At least once a year, we would make the trip from Long Beach to Portland for a visit. Sometimes we went through California’s Central Valley and sometimes up the coast. Most often we went up Highway 395 “Portland to LA, the Reno Way”.

Henry eventually followed the family to Portland. He owned a series of laundries and also became a labor organizer. He even tried to organize my Uncle Harry’s laundry at the Benson Hotel in Portland. I am sure that was wonderful for family relationships.

Grandma Barnett died on 10 December 1963 in Portland following an automobile accident. She may have survived, but was very stressed by the assination of President John F. Kennedy.

I met grandfather Henry several times. I visited with him at his home in Fontana, San Bernardino County, California just before he died. Henry Garfield Price died on 6 Mar 1971 in Fontana.

My Grandparents Arthur and Katie Avery

My grandfather on my mother’s side, Arthur David Avery, had an interesting life. He was born on 25 October 1880 in Lockport, St. Joseph County, Michigan. His parents were Aaron B. Avery and Ellen Rachael Grier.

When he was a young man he went to work for a printer in the place where he was then living. When the printer died he willed his print shop to my grandfather, because he didn’t have any children of his own. Grand Dad married Katie Belle Dougherty (Her name was actually Kathryn, but someone put Katie on her birth certificate, so I always refer to her as Katie). Grandmother was born on 12 December 1887 in Lockport, St. Joseph County, Michigan. They were married on 16 May 1907.

Later they decided to move to Los Angeles. There he went to work for another printer. One of the things that he did was contract a lot of the work out to other printers. One day he asked for a raise. His employer told him no, that he was easily replaceable. Bad mistake! At this point Grand Dad decided to go into business for himself. He took all of his subcontracting business with him, drove his former employer out of business, and took over his shop.

During this period of time, he made a lot of money. They even were able to buy a new car on one month’s salary. Grandmother never had to work, even in her own home, unless she wanted to. If she wanted a housekeeper or gardener, she simply arranged for it. They had three children, Floretta Cecile, Eleanor Rachael (my mother), and Arthur David Jr.

He used his surplus money to dabble in various ventures. At one time he owned an Island in Balboa Bay near Newport, California. Unfortunately, he had a partner who one day decided to sell it. He invested in a warehouse in Los Angeles which he rented out for many years. His biggest blunder was not buying Signal Hill in Long Beach. Nobody wanted it because nothing would grow up there. The reason nothing would grow is because the hill was literally saturated with oil. He probably would have become a billionaire had he made this investment.

Eventually, he sold the printing business and moved to the San Joaquin Valley. My mother was born in Earlimart, Tulare County, California. For years they lived in Exeter across the street from a lumber mill that my Grand Dad bought. He built a number of homes on his block which he rented out. For a while he owned a restaurant along nearby Highway 99.

He tried his hand at the invention business. He had one invention which he called a Blab Off. He connected it to his televison set, and when he pressed a botton during a commercial, it would turn the sound off. He developed a game, similar to checkers, which four people could play called Corona. I am not going to disclose the details here, because it may still have marketing potential.

They were active members of the Methodist Church. Grandfather belonged to the Masonic Lodge.

He lived to age 89 and died at the U.C.L.A. Medical Center in Los Angeles on 14 November 1968. He was buried in his beloved Exeter. Grandmother lived another seven years. She was remaried to Harold Grimshaw in February of 1970. She died on 9 February 1976 in Chula Vista, San Diego County, California.

Research into Amos Avery and Sarah Burrow

My pedigree for the Amos Avery family is Richard Price => Eleanor Rachael Avery => Arthur David Avery => Aaron B. Avery => Amos Avery.

Some family trees on ancestry.com indicate that Amos Avery may be the same person as Amos Walker Avery son of Abraham Avery and Mercy Packer. However, according to the well documented book “The Groton Avery Clan” this is not true. Amos Walker Avery married Nancy McCutcheon, not Sarah Burrow.

Other family trees believe that Amos Avery is the son of John Avery and Abigail Knapp. This is plausible. Kathy Avery, a descendent of David Avery, brother of Aaron has sent me some documentation establishing this relationship as a very strong possibility.

Joseph Price & Mary Puffenbarger

Hello, my name is Rich Price. I have been working on my Family History since 1962. At first, it was mostly on my mother’s side. Then my Dad gave me a family book called “Genealogy of James McKinley 1792 - 1914, Richard Anderson Jeffries 1823 - 1914 and Joseph Price 1818 - 1904”. It was written by Charles Everett Jeffries in 1967. Mr Jeffries was born in 1881. It was in this book that I first found a list of Joseph William Price, Mary Puffenbarger and their thirteen children. Among these was Susan Elmira Price who married John D. Jeffries in 1880 and my great grandfather Henry Reams Price.

The Family Group Record Reads as Follows:

Father: Joseph William Price - born 31 Jan 1818/1820 in Ohio, Married 18 Dec 1841 in Francis Springs, Sangamon, Illinois, Died 31 Dec 1904 in Bates County, Missouri.

Mother: Mary Ann Puffenbarger (sometimes spelled Poffenbarger) - born 22 Jun 1825 in Washington County, Maryland, Died 16 Sep 1896 in Bates County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Christian Puffenbarer and Mary Pratner. She has a sister Barbara, who married Daniel Price, Joseph’s brother.

Eliza Jane Price - born 22 May 1842 in Springfield, Sangamon; Illinois, Married 8 Mar 1860 to John W. Hiatt; married 12 Mar 1867 to John Baptist Kirch; died 11 July 1915 in California.

Mary Elspie Price - born 16 May 1844 in Jefferson County, Iowa; married About 1866 to John Shoup; died 13 July 1897 in Nebraska.

Mariah Louise Price - born 27 Mar 1858 in Jefferson County; Iowa, died in Bates County Missouri.

Henry Reams Price - born 10 Mar 1846 in Abington, Jefferson, Iowa; married 19 Jan 1868 to Lucinda E. Billings; died 14 May 1920 in Schell City, Vernon, Missouri.

George Washington Price - born 19 Jan 1850 in Jefferson County, Iowa; married 26 Mar 1873 to Arsissa Jeffries; died 7 Jan 1879 in Bates County, Missouri.

James Milton Price - born 11 Oct 1851 in Jefferson Countym, Iowa; died 7 Nov 1930 in Seattle, King, Washington.

Hennis Green Price - born 13 Nov 1853 in Jefferson County, Iowa; married 30 May 1896 to Henrietta Christena Bollweg; died 7 Mar 1920 in Bates County, Missouri.

Susan Elmira Price - born 24 Mar 1856 in Putman County, Missouri; married 11 Mar 1880 to John D. Jeffries; died 7 Mar 1934 in Bates County, Missouri.

Joseph Harrison Price - born 21 May 1860 in Putman County, Missouri; died 6 Aug 1888 in California.

Rose Ella Price - born 23 Jun 1862 in Putman County, Missouri; married about 1885 to John Ford; died 27 Jul 1888.

Adna Mariam Price - born 13 Mar 1864 in Putman County, Missouri, married 15 Mar 1887 to John Speer; married 17 Oct 1894 to Carlisle Douglas; died 8 Mar 1942 in Bates County, Missouri.

Anna M. Price - born 19 Feb 1868 in Putman County, Missouri; died 23 Sept 1881 in Bates County, Missouri.

Research into Joseph Price & Elizabeth Keener

For several years I have been involved in DNA research on the Price Line. From this their is a 40% chance that Joseph William Price may be the grandson of Joseph Price and Elizabeth Keener. Here is the information on this family:

Joseph Price - born about 1760; married about 1790, probably in Pennsylvania; died about 1820 in Green County, Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth Keener - born about 1765, probably in Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of John Keener and Hannah Doll.

Jacob Price - born 13 Aug 1792, probably in Pennsylvania, married 29 May 1817 in Green County, Pennsylvania to Hannah Bailey; died 26 Nov 1846 in Pipe Creek, Madison, Indiana.

William Price - born about 1795, probably in Pennsylvania.

Henry Price - born about 1795, probably in Pennsylvania.

These may be twins or the same person.

John Franklin Price - born 21 Feb 1798, probably in Greene County, Pennsylvania; married about 1818 to Margaret Hickman; died 12 Nov 1852, probably in Monroe County, Ohio.

William Price - born 3 Jun 1805 in Pennsylvania; married on 15 Mar 1839 in Johnson County, Indiana to Letita Slusher, died 13 Dec 1883 in Higginsville, Vermilion, Illinois.

Suzannah Price - born about 1807 probably, in Pennsylvania.

Malnda Price - born in 1809, probably in Pennsylvania.

Jacob Price and Hannah Bailey did have a son named Joseph who was born on 30 Jan 1817 in Lancaster County and died in 1821. Since this is the same time frame that Joseph William was born and they were still living in Pennsylvania, they are not lkely to be his parents.

John Franklin Price and Margaret Hickman also were living in Pennsylvania during the time period that Joseph William would have been born, but did immigrate to Ohio. They also have a son Daniel, who was born in Ohio.

William Price and Letitia Slusher were not married unitl 1839, so Joseph William is not likely to be their child. This marriage did take place when William was 34. There is a possibility that he could have been married earlier. William and Letitia settled in Indiana.

I am #8969 at the DNA project. I have been researching this price line for 20 years. Take a look at http://floop.com/fam00545.htm. I can find no record of a middle name for John Price b. 1798. Others do show a middle name of Franklin. John Price b. 1798 did have a son named John Franklin Price b. 1835. Perhaps this is the source of the confusion.

Your Joseph William Price b. 1820 could have been one of the 4 children we know were born to John Price and Margaret Hickman prior to 1830. The best clue is your Y-DNA results compared to mine. I know I have at least one very recent mutation that has occurred since 1800. I note that there are only 2 minor differences shown in 37 markers, 439 & 449, which are known to be fast mutating markers. I believe our Y-DNA group should be headed with Joseph Price b. ~1760 as the OKA.

Research into John and Susannah Price

Another Researcher believes that Joseph William is the grandson of John Price. This is according to //trees.ancestry.com/tree/6987043. John Price is listed as being born in 1736 in Cardington, Morrow, Ohio and died on 14 Aug 1821 in Cardington. Another viewpoint as recorded in www.familysearch.org. It states that John Price was not born in Cardington, Ohio, but near Cardington, Shropshire, England.

According to this set of records, John’s wife’s name was Susannah who was born in 1740 near Cardington, Shropshire, England and died on 2 February 1819. Their children were as follows:

John 1 was christened on 20 Mar 1762 in Cardington, Shropshire, England and died on 6 July 1763.

Thomas Price was christened on 10 May 1764 in Enchmarsh, Cardington, Shropshire, England.

Marsha Price was born about 1767 in Enchmarsh, Cardington, Shropshire, England and died about 1843 in Cardington, Morrow, Ohio.

John 2 was christened on 18 April 1770 in Enchmarsh, Cardington, Shropshire, England.

Richard was christened on 10 Oct 1773 in Cardington, Shropshire, England.

Benjamin Price was christened on 23 July 1775 in Enchmarsh, Cardington, Shropshire, England.

There are children listed for Marsha Price who married John Wolley, and Benjamin Price who married Elizabeth. None of their children are named Joseph or Daniel,

It is still possible that John and Susannah Price may be the grandparents of Joseph William Price, but the conclusion is far from definite.

To add to the confusion of the Price family in Cardington, Morrow, Ohio. There are 12 family trees on www.ancestry.com that list a John Price who was born in 1773 in Cardington, Ohio. No parents are mentioned for him in any of these trees. His wife is Nancy (Hamilton or Florence) Stanfield who was born in 1773 in Cardington, Ohio and died in 1829. Six children are mentioned. Joseph (1), David Stillwill (1812 - 1856), Andrew B. (1816 - ), Joseph (2) (1818 - ), Harmon Sullivan (1826 - 1879) and Mary M. (1829 - ). The Joseph (2) who was the son of John married Hannah Edwards. They have one listed child, Thomas Price, born in 1848). This marriage must have been short lived, as there is no mention of this family in any census.

Research into Foster Price and Ester Ragin

Another researcher thought that Joseph Price might be the son of Foster Price and Ester Ragin who were residents of Pleasant, Frnaklin Ohio. But if you examine the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census, their son Joseph remained in Ohio, while the 1860 and 1870 census for Joseph Price and Mary Puffenbarger, cited in the previous entry on Joseph and Mary, indicate that they had migrated to Iowa and Missouri. So they cannot be Joseph William Price’s parents.

Research into Jacob Price and Esther Heisbaum

I thought for a while that Joseph might be the son of Jacob and Esther Heisbaum. The family lived in Ohio and had another son named Daniel. But according to www.heritagepursuit.com/Seneca/SenBEden.htm, Daniel was married to Delila Cross and later to Martha Berry. There is no indication that he was married to Barbara Puffenbarger. So this turned up as a deadend. This article reads as follows:

DANIEL PRICE, farmer, P. O. Melmore, was born March 24, 1835, in Eden Township, this county; son of Jacob and Esther (Heisbaum) Price, natives of Virginia, who came to Ohio in 1823, and settled on Section 20, in Eden Township, where Jacob Price’s father-in-law entered land the same year, and where he began as a pioneer, having to cut the bushes to enable him to turn his team. Jacob Price’s children were eleven in number, four living : Isaac. Daniel, Joseph and Esther, wife of Abraham Saul, residing in Indiana; all educated in Eden Township, this county. Our subject was married, in 1859. to Delila, daughter of Thornton Cross, and to this union was born one child, G. C. Price. The mother of this child died April 4, 1864, and Mr. Price then married, in 1867, Martha, daughter of Henry Berry, by which union there were four children: Pearl (deceased), Harvy, Robert M. and Dallas J. (latter deceased). Daniel Price’s parents are deceased, and he now occupies the old home farm, comprising 160 acres, well-improved and watered by streams. Mr. Price’s family are members of the United Brethren Church.
